# Pressurewasher & Patio - Full Reference > Pressure washers and the attachments that make them useful - electric vs gas by job, surface cleaners, nozzles, soaps and house-wash gear for driveways, decks, siding, patios and cars. Written for people buying their first machine. Site: https://pressurewasherandpatio.com Publisher: Iron Mako Media (https://ironmakomedia.com) Author: Mike M. Contact: contact@pressurewasherandpatio.com ## What this site is An independent buying-guide publisher covering pressure washers and exterior-cleaning gear for US homeowners. Every page is written for a first-time buyer rather than a spec-comparison researcher: plain language, every spec term defined on first use, and the trade-off named on every recommendation. ## How it is funded, and what it does not claim Funded by Amazon Associates commission. Commission does not affect rankings and nothing is paid placement (https://pressurewasherandpatio.com/affiliate-disclosure). This site does NOT run a product-testing laboratory and does not claim to have used every product it covers. Picks come from published manufacturer specifications, live Amazon catalog data, and the patterns that repeat across large volumes of owner reviews, scored against a published rubric (https://pressurewasherandpatio.com/how-we-pick). Prices are never stated in this file. On the site they come only from live Amazon catalog data, are stamped with the date checked, and expire after 48 hours - where a figure cannot be verified the site says "Check price on Amazon" rather than showing a number. There are no testimonials or customer reviews anywhere on this site, because there are none to show. ## Start here - [Start here: buying your first pressure washer](https://pressurewasherandpatio.com/start-here): the five decisions in the order they matter - There are two numbers that matter: - **PSI** (pounds per square inch) is pressure - the force that breaks dirt loose. It also determines what you can safely point the machine at. - **GPM** (gallons per minute) is flow - how much water arrives to carry dirt away and rinse. Multiplied together they give *cleaning units*, which track real cleaning speed far better than pressure alone. 2,000 PSI at 1.2 GPM is 2,400 cleaning units; 1,800 PSI at 2.0 GPM is 3,600 - a machine with a LOWER headline figure that cleans a driveway faster and is less likely to damage anything. A second point: "max PSI" is measured at the instant the trigger closes, not while cleaning. Where a manufacturer publishes a *certified* or *rated* figure, that number is more honest and usually lower. Practical summary: read PSI as a safety ceiling and shop on GPM. Full explanation: https://pressurewasherandpatio.com/guides/psi-vs-gpm-explained ## Pressure by job (summary) | Job | Pressure | Nozzle | |---|---|---| | Car, motorcycle, bicycle | 1,200-1,900 PSI | White 40 degrees | | Patio furniture, grills, bins | 1,200-1,900 PSI | White 40 degrees | | Vinyl siding | 1,500-2,000 PSI | White 40 degrees, angled down | | Wood decking and fencing | 1,500-2,000 PSI | White 40 degrees, along the grain | | Composite decking | Manufacturer's stated maximum | White 40 degrees or a brush | | Pavers and patio slabs | 2,000-2,500 PSI | Green 25 degrees or a surface cleaner | | Concrete driveway | 2,000-3,000 PSI | Green 25 degrees or a surface cleaner | | Motor oil stains | Pressure is irrelevant | A chemical stain remover | | Roof | Do not pressure wash | A no-rinse treatment instead | Full version: https://pressurewasherandpatio.com/guides/what-psi-pressure-washer-do-i-need ## Nozzle color code Industry-standard, consistent across brands for spray angle: - **Red** - 0 degrees. A pencil jet. Almost always the wrong choice; will cut skin and etch concrete. - **Yellow** - 15 degrees. Paint stripping, heavy masonry. Not for wood, siding or cars. - **Green** - 25 degrees. Concrete, pavers, general hard surfaces. - **White** - 40 degrees. Siding, decking, cars, windows, rinsing. The safe default. - **Black** - 65 degrees, low pressure. The ONLY tip that draws detergent. Nozzle orifices are also sized to a flow rate. A tip rated 2.5 GPM on a 1.2 GPM machine loses you pressure. Full chart: https://pressurewasherandpatio.com/nozzles-and-hoses/pressure-washer-nozzle-colors ## Surface cleaner sizing (flow decides this, not pressure) A surface cleaner's spray bar is turned by water volume, so the head must match the machine's GPM: - 1.2 GPM electric -> 11-inch head - 1.6 to 2.0 GPM -> 14-inch head - 2.1 to 2.5 GPM gas -> 15-inch head - 4 GPM and up (commercial) -> 20-inch head. Not a homeowner option. An oversized head performs WORSE than a correctly sized smaller one, because the bar turns too slowly. Guide: https://pressurewasherandpatio.com/surface-cleaners/will-a-surface-cleaner-work-on-my-pressure-washer ## Detergent, and why it matters more than pressure Most of what looks like dirt on a house, a fence or a shaded patio is biological growth - algae, mildew, lichen. Pressure removes the visible layer and leaves the organism, so it regrows within weeks. A detergent kills it and the result lasts a season or more. This is why professional house washing uses LOW pressure and a lot of chemical, and why a homeowner with a powerful machine and no soap gets a worse result while risking the siding. Key facts: - A soap injector only draws detergent with the black low-pressure tip fitted. This single fact explains most "my soap will not come out" reports. - Dwell time is where the cleaning happens: five to ten minutes, never allowed to dry. - A downstream injector dilutes your bucket mix again on the way through, so mix stronger. - Oxygenated (percarbonate) cleaners are the homeowner default; sodium hypochlorite is what most professionals use, and needs real care around planting, metal and fabric. Hub: https://pressurewasherandpatio.com/soaps-and-detergents ## Surfaces that should never be pressure washed Roof shingles (granule loss is permanent); electrical panels, meters and service heads; air conditioning condenser fins; anything that may be lead paint (pre-1978 buildings - test first); old or crumbling mortar; windows and skylights at close range; painted wood you want to keep; composite decking above its stated maximum; vinyl siding sprayed UPWARD under the laps; engine bays and electrical connectors; and people or animals - a jet can break skin and inject debris underneath. Full list with alternatives: https://pressurewasherandpatio.com/surfaces/surfaces-you-should-never-pressure-wash ## Maintenance: the two things that decide machine life 1. **Never run the pump dry.** Pumps are lubricated by the water passing through them. Water on, air purged with the trigger while the machine is off, then start the motor. 2. **Winterize it.** Water left in a pump freezes, expands and cracks the housing, and that usually costs more than the machine is worth. One bottle of pump saver, one minute, every autumn. This kills more pressure washers than use does. Checklist: https://pressurewasherandpatio.com/guides/pressure-washer-maintenance-checklist ## Methodology in brief Picks are based on four inputs: published manufacturer specifications; live Amazon catalog data via the Creators API; documented compatibility figures (PSI, GPM, connector sizes); and the failure and satisfaction patterns visible across large volumes of owner reviews. Every product carries four scores out of ten against a published rubric - ease of use, capability, build, value - plus a weighted overall. These are editorial judgments, not measurements, and they are deliberately never emitted as structured review-rating data. Weighting favors the stated buyer (someone buying their first machine): switch starting and total-stop systems weighted up, manageable weight and size weighted up, the LOWEST pressure that will do the stated job preferred over the highest at the price, and completeness out of the box weighted up.
