These are sold next to each other and look similar, and they are not interchangeable. The difference is what they connect to, and that decides everything else.

| Connects to | A pressure washer | A garden hose |
| Foam thickness | Thick, clings to vertical panels | Thin, runs off sooner |
| Soap used per wash | Less | More, for less result |

Why the cannon foams so much better
A pressure washer delivers water at well over a thousand PSI. Forcing that through soap solution and a mesh screen whips in a lot of air and produces dense foam. A garden hose delivers 40 to 60 PSI, so the same mechanism produces something closer to a soapy spray.
It is a physics limit, not a design flaw. No foam gun will match a cannon, and no amount of extra soap closes the gap — it just uses more soap.
When the foam gun is the right answer
You do not own a pressure washer and do not want one. For a flat, a townhouse with no outdoor storage, or anyone whose only cleaning job is the car, a foam gun plus a hose plus a good mitt is a complete and perfectly respectable setup.
You want the paint-safety benefit without the kit. Even thin foam floats grit off the surface before a mitt touches it, which is the main reason to foam at all. You get most of that benefit.
Convenience matters more than results. It screws onto the hose in ten seconds. For a quick weekly wash that genuinely matters.
Whether you need a machine at all is the subject of do I need a pressure washer and pressure washer vs garden hose.
When the cannon is worth it
You already own a pressure washer. Then it is an obvious yes — a budget cannon is cheap and dramatically better than a gun.
You have other cleaning jobs. If you are buying a machine for the driveway anyway, the cannon is a small addition.
You want the proper pre-wash and rinse. The cannon plus the machine’s rinse is a genuinely better wash than hose pressure can deliver.
The honest recommendation
If the car is your only reason to buy a pressure washer, buy a foam gun first. It costs a fraction, it will do the job, and if you later find you want more you have lost very little.
If you have any other cleaning jobs — a driveway, a deck, siding — buy the machine for those and add a budget cannon. Picks in best foam cannons and do I need a pressure washer for a foam cannon.
