A driveway is the job surface cleaners were invented for: a large, flat, uniform expanse of the toughest surface a house has. It is also the only job where width genuinely pays, so this page leans toward the 14 and 15-inch heads — with the flow caveat that runs through this entire hub.
Width only helps if you can spin it
A 15-inch head at 2.5 GPM is a different tool from the same head at 1.2 GPM. Before you order anything here, find your machine’s flow on its label. If it is under 1.6 GPM, go to the electric-specific page instead — you will get a better driveway from a correctly sized 11 or 14-inch head than from an oversized 15.
What a driveway asks that a patio does not
Abrasion. Broom-finish concrete scuffs a plastic skirt in a season and will crack a plastic housing if you drop it. The Simpson steel head is here because a driveway is where steel earns its price.
Distance. A driveway is a long walk, repeated. A head with a handle or good wheel geometry is the difference between a job and an ordeal, which is why the Edou head with its handle appears despite its plastic housing.
Expansion joints. Every driveway has them, and they are where three-wheel heads tip and leave crescent marks. Four wheels is worth more here than anywhere.
The chemical half of the job
A surface cleaner removes what is on the slab. It does not kill what is growing in it, and it will not touch oil.
Algae is why a freshly cleaned driveway looks bad again by midsummer. A concrete cleaner with real chemistry, applied and left to dwell, keeps it away for a season. Motor oil is soaked in, and needs a pull-out stain remover rather than pressure. Doing both before you start saves a pass and produces a visibly better result.
The perimeter problem
Every surface cleaner leaves an uncleaned strip against walls, curbs and garage thresholds, and it cannot do the apron or any steps. Budget for a turbo nozzle or at least plan to do the edges with a 25-degree tip, and do them first so the final rinse carries the loosened dirt away rather than depositing it on clean slab.
Sequence and the stripe-avoidance technique are in how to pressure wash a driveway, and the matching machines are in best pressure washers for driveways.
