Almost everyone buying their first pressure washer buys more pressure than they need, and the reason is that PSI is the only number on the box. Here is what each job actually wants.
The table
| Job | Pressure | Nozzle |
|---|
| Car, motorcycle, bicycle | 1,200 - 1,900 PSI | White 40° |
| Patio furniture, grills, bins | 1,200 - 1,900 PSI | White 40° |
| Vinyl siding | 1,500 - 2,000 PSI | White 40°, angled down |
| Wood decking and fencing | 1,500 - 2,000 PSI | White 40°, along the grain |
| Composite decking | Manufacturer’s stated maximum | White 40° or a brush |
| Pavers and patio slabs | 2,000 - 2,500 PSI | Green 25° or a surface cleaner |
| Concrete driveway | 2,000 - 3,000 PSI | Green 25° or a surface cleaner |
| Stained concrete, algae | 2,000 - 3,000 PSI | Turbo nozzle, always moving |
| Motor oil stains | Pressure is irrelevant | A chemical stain remover |
| Brick and masonry | 2,000 - 3,000 PSI, test first | Green 25° |
| Roof | Do not | A no-rinse treatment instead |
Which means a machine capable of around 2,000 to 2,500 PSI, with wide tips available, covers everything a house has. Anything above that is for speed on concrete, not for capability.
Distance is a finer control than PSI
Pressure falls off quickly with distance, so where you stand matters more than which machine you bought. A white 40-degree tip two inches from siding is more aggressive than a green tip two feet away.
The habit: start further away than feels necessary, move in until it is working, and stop. Back off again at every edge, seal, badge or joint. Nozzle angles are in the color chart.
Why the flow figure matters as much
PSI tells you what you can safely point the machine at. GPM tells you how long the job takes. Pressure breaks dirt loose; flow carries it away.
Two thousand PSI at 1.2 GPM gives 2,400 cleaning units. Eighteen hundred PSI at 2.0 GPM gives 3,600 — a lower headline figure on a machine that cleans a driveway faster and is less likely to damage anything. The arithmetic is in PSI vs GPM explained.
Flow also decides whether a surface cleaner will spin and how thick foam gets. So when you are shopping, read the PSI figure as a safety ceiling and the GPM figure as the real specification.
Max PSI is not working PSI
“Max PSI” is recorded at the instant the trigger closes and the pump stalls against the valve. It is not the pressure you clean with. A unit advertised at 2,500 max PSI may be delivering closer to 1,800 or 2,000 at the nozzle in use.
Where a manufacturer publishes a certified or rated figure, that number is the honest one — and it will look lower on a shelf next to a competitor quoting a max figure. Trust the certified one.
When the answer is not pressure at all
Oil stains need a chemical that draws the oil out of the slab — concrete cleaners.
Mildew and algae need something that kills them, or they regrow within weeks — house wash.
Delicate surfaces need agitation at low pressure — soft wash vs pressure wash.
On a surprising number of household jobs, the chemical is the tool and the pressure washer is just the rinse.
What to buy
A machine around 2,000 to 2,500 PSI with 1.6 GPM or better covers everything in the table above. Picks are in best pressure washers for beginners, and the decision order is in how to choose a pressure washer.
