A hose reel is a convenience purchase, and nobody needs one. If you use a pressure washer once a year, coil the hose by hand and spend the money on a surface cleaner. If you are out there monthly, a reel turns the most tedious part of the job into thirty seconds and keeps the hose from being damaged in storage.
The one rule: match the reel to the hose
There are two completely different products here and mixing them up is the mistake to avoid.
A high-pressure hose reel is rated for the pressure your machine produces and has fittings and an internal swivel that can hold it. You can leave the hose connected and reel it in under pressure.
A garden hose reel is rated for mains pressure — roughly 40 to 60 PSI. Putting a high-pressure hose on one and using it connected is a burst waiting to happen. Garden reels are for the supply side only.
Both have a place: one for the high-pressure hose, one for the garden hose that feeds the machine. The Liberty Garden reel in the picks here is for the supply side, and that is the job it is good at.
Cart or wall mount?
A cart carries the reel to the job, which matters if your work is spread around a property — a driveway at the front, a deck at the back. Look for wheels of genuine size: 10-inch wheels roll over grass and gravel, while small plastic casters dig in and become a two-handed drag.
A wall mount is tidier, cheaper and permanent. Right if you always work in one place, and it needs solid wall anchors. Cast aluminum over painted steel if the wall is visible, because painted steel leaves a rust streak eventually.
What to check on a cart
Hose capacity against what you actually own. A reel rated for 100 feet handles a 50-foot hose with room for the leader.
Crank action under load. The failure mode on cheap reels is a crank that binds once the drum is full, which defeats the purpose.
Frame material. Carbon steel is strong and will rust where the paint chips; keep it out of standing water.
The cheaper answer
Most of what a reel buys you is hose longevity, and most of that you can get for free: coil in large loose loops rather than tight ones, keep it out of direct sunlight, and do not leave it where a car can run over the fittings. A wall hook and good habits cover a lot of ground.
The hoses themselves are in best pressure washer hoses, and if your hose is constantly twisting, the fix is a swivel connector rather than a reel.
