Car soap has one job the outdoor cleaners on this hub do not: it must be pH neutral, so it cleans without stripping the wax or sealant underneath. Everything else — foam thickness, slickness, scent — is preference.
Your machine decides the foam, not the soap
This is the thing to understand before spending money. Foam thickness depends on, in order: your machine’s GPM, then the soap, then the cannon.
People buy an expensive snow foam, bolt it to a 1.2 GPM machine through a budget cannon, and are disappointed. The soap was never the limit. If your machine is low-flow, pick a soap that foams at low concentration and set your cannon to a richer mix — foam cannons for electric machines covers that case specifically.
Snow foam or dual-purpose?
Dedicated snow foams are formulated to produce thick clinging foam at low concentration. They cling to vertical panels and dwell, which is the whole point of a pre-wash. Honeydew is the reference here.
Dual-purpose soaps work properly in both a cannon and a wash bucket. Less thick foam, one bottle instead of two. Mr. Pink is the sensible single purchase if you do not want a shelf of chemicals.
Gallon-size maintenance soaps are the cheapest per wash by a wide margin, which matters if you wash weekly and is a waste of storage if you wash twice a year.
What foam actually does
Not as much as the videos imply. Foam loosens dirt and, more importantly, lifts grit off the surface so the wash mitt is not dragging it across the paint. That is where swirl marks come from, and reducing it is the real benefit.
Foam does not replace the contact wash. A foam-and-rinse alone leaves a film on anything but a lightly dusty car. Anyone selling a genuinely touchless home wash is overstating what is possible, which is why a soft mitt is in the picks on this page — it is the step foam supports rather than replaces.

Dilution
Cannon mixes are typically in the region of one to three ounces of soap in a liter of warm water, then the cannon’s own dial controls how rich the output is. Warm water dissolves concentrate better and foams noticeably more — a free improvement most people skip.

What to avoid
Dish soap. It strips wax and sealant, and it is alkaline. It will clean your car and undo your protection at the same time.
Outdoor and house-wash cleaners on paint. Everything else on this hub is formulated for siding, concrete or wood and is far too aggressive for clear coat.
Wheel cleaners in a foam cannon. Acidic wheel products should not be spread over paint. Wheels are a separate, bucket-and-brush job.
