Do I need a surface cleaner?

If you have flat concrete, almost certainly. If you do not, no.

Do I need a surface cleaner? - Sun Joe SPX-SC14 14-Inch
By Mike M.|Last checked: |How we pick

Short version: if you have a driveway, a patio, a path or a garage floor, a surface cleaner is the best accessory you can buy for a pressure washer and it is not close. If your list is a car, some furniture and a fence, you do not need one at all.

The four things it fixes

Speed. A wand cleans a two-inch stripe. A 14-inch head cleans fourteen inches. On a two-car driveway that is the difference between an afternoon and under an hour, every time you do it.

Evenness. This matters more than speed and people do not expect it. Wand cleaning leaves overlap marks — faint stripes where passes met, visible for months whenever the light is low. A surface cleaner covers an even disc and does not.

Water and soap everywhere. The skirt contains the spray, so you are not soaking the garage door, the car, the siding and yourself. On a driveway next to a house this is a genuine quality-of-life difference.

Your back. You push it instead of sweeping a wand at arm’s length for two hours. Anyone who has done a large driveway with a wand understands this immediately.

When you genuinely do not need one

No flat hard surfaces. Cars, bikes, furniture, bins, a wooden fence, a small deck. A surface cleaner does nothing for any of those.

Your machine does well under 1.2 GPM. Below that, nothing will spin usefully. Buy a turbo nozzle instead — it is the correct accessory for a low-flow machine on concrete.

Your flat area is tiny or very obstructed. A balcony, a path 18 inches wide, a patio that is mostly furniture. You will spend the job lifting the head over things.

The problem is an oil stain. That is chemical, and no attachment will fix it.

What it costs, honestly

Entry heads are around the price of a bottle of good detergent; a stainless four-wheel head is a bit more. Against the time saving on a single driveway, it pays for itself the first time. It is one of the few accessories where that is genuinely true rather than a marketing line.

The one way to waste the money is to buy the wrong size. Match it to your machine’s flow, which is on its label: here is how.

What you will still need alongside it

A wand and a 25-degree tip for edges, corners and steps, because the head cannot reach any of them. And a concrete cleaner, because a surface cleaner removes what is on the slab without killing what is growing in it.

Then use it properly — most of the complaints about surface cleaners are technique or sizing, not the tool.

The trade-off

  • Still too much for a 1.2 GPM machine
  • The skirt scuffs on rough broom-finish concrete

Common questions

Is a surface cleaner worth it for one driveway a year?

Yes. The time saving on a single large driveway is usually more than the cost of an entry-level head, and the finish is visibly better.

Can I just use a turbo nozzle instead?

On a low-flow machine, that is actually the better choice. On a machine with the flow for a surface cleaner, the head is faster and far more even — keep the turbo nozzle for edges.

Will it work on my gravel drive?

No. Surface cleaners need a hard, reasonably flat surface. On gravel the head will dig, jam and throw stones.
