Soap is the second biggest factor in foam quality after your machine’s flow rate, and it is the only one you can change cheaply. If your foam is thin, this page is a better place to spend money than a new cannon.
The one non-negotiable
pH neutral. An alkaline soap will clean and strip the wax or sealant underneath at the same time, which undoes the protection you may have spent an afternoon applying. Every soap on this page is pH neutral; dish soap is not.
Snow foam or dual-purpose?
Dedicated snow foam is formulated to produce thick clinging foam from very little product. It clings to vertical panels and dwells, which is the entire point of a pre-wash. It is also the right choice on a low-flow machine, because it does the most with the least water. Honeydew is the reference.
Dual-purpose shampoo works properly in both a cannon and a wash bucket. Less dramatic foam, one bottle instead of two, slicker in the bucket so the mitt drags less. Mr. Pink is the sensible single purchase.
Gallon-size maintenance soap is by far the cheapest per wash, which matters if you wash weekly and is a storage problem if you wash twice a year.
Matching the soap to your machine
1.2 GPM: a dedicated snow foam, mixed at the strong end, in warm water. You need the soap to do the work the flow cannot — more on that case.
1.76 GPM and up: almost any good soap will foam well. Choose on slickness, scent and cost per wash rather than on foaming claims.
What foam does and does not do
It loosens dirt, and more importantly it floats grit off the surface so your mitt is not dragging it across the clear coat. That is where swirl marks come from, and reducing it is the real benefit.
It does not replace the contact wash. On anything beyond a lightly dusty car, foam and rinse alone leaves a film. The mitt is still the step that cleans — the full sequence.
Mixing
Typically one to three ounces of concentrate in a liter of warm water, then the cannon’s own dial controls richness. Soap in first, then water, to limit foaming while you fill. Shake gently rather than vigorously.

What not to put in a cannon
Dish soap. Strips wax, alkaline, and some formulations are hard on seals.
House wash or any outdoor cleaner. Formulated for siding and concrete; far too aggressive for clear coat. Everything in the soaps hub except the car soaps belongs nowhere near paint.
Wheel cleaner. Acidic wheel products should not be spread over paint. Wheels are a separate bucket-and-brush job.
Anything with grit or solids. It blocks the mesh and the mesh is the cannon.
