“Detailing” and “washing” shade into each other, but the requirements genuinely differ. A wash needs enough water to rinse. Detailing is about repeatability and about minimizing every opportunity to put a mark in the paint — which changes what you shop for.
The spec that matters is flow, not pressure
Pressure stays where it was: a wide tip, sensible distance, nothing aggressive near paint. What detailing adds is a demand for foam quality, and that is a flow question.
A 1.76 GPM machine with a good cannon produces thick clinging foam that dwells on vertical panels. A 1.2 GPM machine with the same cannon and soap produces something thinner that runs off sooner. The cannon is rarely the limit; the machine is. Which is why the ePX3050 at 1.76 GPM leads this page and the premium cannon sits alongside it rather than above it.
What a detailing setup actually is
The machine. Modest pressure, decent flow, and a trigger that is comfortable for the twenty minutes you will be holding it.
A good cannon. This is where the step up is real: finer mesh, an adjustment dial that genuinely changes the foam rather than just the spray width, and fittings that do not weep at the neck — the cannon picks.
A pH-neutral soap formulated to foam at low concentration, so it will not strip the wax or sealant you have spent time applying — soap picks.
Two mitts and two buckets. This is the part nobody puts in a pressure washer roundup and it matters more than the machine: a deep-pile mitt that lifts grit away from the paint, a second mitt for the lower panels, and a rinse bucket so you are not reloading grit onto the car.
Where the money is genuinely worth spending
In order: the mitt (cheapest, biggest effect on paint), then the soap, then the cannon, then the machine. That order is the opposite of how most people buy, and it is why a $150 machine with good consumables out-details a $400 machine with a sponge from a gas station.
What a pressure washer will not do for detailing
It will not remove bonded contamination — tar, iron fallout, overspray. That is a clay bar and chemical decontamination job.
It will not correct swirl marks. Those are in the clear coat and need polishing.
And it should not be pointed into engine bays, around failing seals, at peeling clear coat, or at anything aftermarket you did not fit yourself. The limits are in is it safe to pressure wash a car.
The one genuine addition for detailing
An undercarriage cleaner, if you live with road salt. Salt under a car causes the corrosion that eventually matters, and the underside is the one area a pressure washer reaches that nothing else does. It is in the accessories list.
Method, in order, is in how to pressure wash a car.
