This is the job where buying the most powerful machine you can afford actively works against you. Wood furs and furrows. Composite spots and streaks. Vinyl siding survives surprising pressure from the front and almost none driven up behind it, where water gets into the wall. Painted trim lifts. Window seals leak.
So the picks here are deliberately modest machines, chosen for how well they apply detergent and how far they reach — because on these two surfaces, chemistry and dwell time do the cleaning and the pressure washer is mostly a rinse tool.
Why low pressure cleans siding better
What looks like dirt on a shaded wall is usually mildew and algae. Pressure knocks the surface layer off and it regrows within weeks. A house wash kills it and it stays gone for a season or more. That is the entire argument for soft washing, and it is what professionals do.
Practically: apply cleaner at low pressure through the black soap tip, let it dwell without drying, then rinse with the white 40-degree tip from a sensible distance, working top-down on the rinse and bottom-up on the application so you do not get streaks.
Wood needs a different approach again
On a deck the risk is mechanical: too much pressure raises the grain and leaves a permanent washboard pattern that only sanding fixes. Use the widest fan you have, keep the nozzle well back and moving along the grain, and if the boards are badly gray, reach for a deck cleaner or a brush attachment rather than more pressure.
If a stain or sealer is going on afterwards, the cleaner has to rinse clean and the wood has to dry properly — usually two dry days. That is covered in pressure washing before staining a deck.
Reach matters more than power
The most dangerous thing a homeowner does with a pressure washer is use one on a ladder. The gun kicks, your footing is poor and both hands are busy. The answer is an extension wand — which is why one appears in the picks on this page alongside the machines. From the ground, a 21-foot wand covers a two-story wall.
The step-by-steps are in how to pressure wash a deck and how to pressure wash vinyl siding.
