Someone who washes their own car is one of the easiest people to buy for, because the hobby consumes things and most people buying for them do not know which things. This page is written for the gifter.
Check one thing first
Do they own a pressure washer? It changes which foam product is the right present entirely.
If yes: a foam cannon is the obvious gift, and you need to know whether their gun takes 1/4-inch quick connect (a push-on coupler) or M22 threads. A photo of the end of their wand answers it. If you cannot find out, add a cheap adapter set to the order — it costs almost nothing and covers every case.
If no: buy a garden-hose foam gun instead. It screws onto a tap hose and makes thinner foam, and it is the right present rather than a consolation one. Do not buy a cannon for someone with no machine; it will not work — why.
Under $25: the things they get through
Microfiber wash mitts. The single best cheap gift here, and the least obvious. A deep-pile mitt lifts grit up and away from the paint instead of dragging it across, which is where swirl marks come from. They wear out, people put off replacing them, and two in a pack is exactly right.
A gallon of pH-neutral car soap. Boring, used constantly, and nobody buys themselves the big bottle. “pH neutral” is the thing to look for — it means it cleans without stripping wax.
$25 to $60: the fun one
A snow foam. A dedicated foam soap that produces the thick covering people enjoy. It works in a foam cannon or a foam gun, so it is safe to buy either way, and it is the gift most likely to get used the same weekend.
A budget foam cannon, if they have a pressure washer and no cannon. One liter, adjustable, with the quick connect fitted. Cheap, genuinely transformative, and the present they will send you a photo of — the picks.
A garden-hose foam gun, if they do not have a machine. Same idea, lower ceiling, no compatibility risk at all.
Over $60: for the one who is properly into it
A premium foam cannon. Finer mesh, an adjustment that genuinely changes the foam, brass fittings. The right gift for someone who already owns a budget cannon and has mentioned wanting better foam.
One caveat worth knowing: foam thickness depends mostly on their machine’s flow rate, not the cannon. If they have a small electric unit, a premium cannon will be a smaller upgrade than it looks — the snow foam would be the better buy. The explanation is in foam cannons for electric pressure washers.
What not to buy
A sponge. Flat sponges trap grit against paint. A mitt is strictly better and costs the same.
Dish soap or anything not pH neutral. It strips wax.
A turbo nozzle, if the car is their main interest. It is excellent on concrete and it will strip paint — wrong gift for this recipient.
Wax or sealant, unless you know what they use. This is the most opinionated corner of the hobby and the odds of guessing right are poor.
